“I was very happy with the team, how we performed” – Dambrauskas

Sabah faced Araz-Nakhchivan away in matchweek 3 of the Misli Premier League. The match, played at Gabala City Stadium, ended in a narrow victory for our team.

Our head coach Valdas Dambrauskas shared his thoughts after the match:

“We knew what kind of game awaited us today. After such an important European match, with so many emotions and extra time, we knew it would not be easy. The game was also affected by the very heavy rain before kick-off. When we arrived at the stadium, we did not even know whether the match would go ahead because there had been so much rain. Overall, though, I was very happy with the team and the way we performed. I think we dominated the entire first half and most of the second, and we created chances throughout.

Perhaps we lacked a little sharpness in the final stages of our attacks, especially inside the opposition’s penalty area. Overall, however, I think we were the better team and deserved this win. Yes, the goal was a little unusual, coming from a goalkeeping error, but a goal is a goal. If you keep a clean sheet and score, you win the game. When you have a narrow lead late in the game, as we did today at 1–0, the opposition will always try to find a way back. We could have paid the price for a couple of mistakes. Fortunately, our goalkeeper was in excellent form today and saved both of their shots.

Nevertheless, I believe our performance made us worthy winners. The priority now is to get back to Baku. It is a very long journey, and then we need to prepare for the next match. The fixtures are coming thick and fast, so we must stay focused and take things one game at a time. I am also pleased that we were able to rotate the team again today, making three or four changes and giving more minutes to players who had featured less at the start of the season. Everything went according to plan, and now it is time to move on and prepare for the next game.”
